{Cara & Mike’s Engagement Shoot}

“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.”
― Robert A. Heinlein

I’ve mentioned this before, but I think it should be repeated:
When you’re looking for the location for your photos, whether it’s family pictures, engagement pictures, wedding photos…choose a location with OPTIONS!

If you’ve been following the Machado Photography blog, you’ve noticed that we do quite a few shoots at Waterloo Park. That’s because it’s a FANTASTIC location choice! There are so many diverse areas within Waterloo Park that one session can look like it took place all over the city! Cara & Mike’s engagement shoot is a perfect example of what I mean.

Cara & Mike came up with the creative idea to take photos of themselves with all 16  table numbers that they’ll use as part of the center pieces at their wedding next summer. They really wanted all the photos to be different. Using just Waterloo Park, we accomplished their mission!

At each location, you can see the chalkboard with Mike’s stylishly handwritten numbers (his handwriting is so good that I might have to concede that it’s better than mine!). Their settings include small waterfalls, the balcony of the Grist Mill, a dock, the pebbled trails, the garden area’s stone arbour, wooded areas, a stone wall in front of a lovely house, the old wooden school house, railroad tracks, a bridge, a picnic area and the boardwalk around the lake. How many locations have that many options within a few acres?

Even if we don’t consider that Cara & Mike wanted a variety for their table numbers, look at the amazing diversity of their engagement photos! This couple didn’t need much direction from me to achieve the unity that they show; they worked together exceptionally well! They were so aware of each other and what they were doing that I just let them pose naturally!

Looking forward to working with Cara & Mike at their wedding next summer; we’ll have some gorgeous photos to show you for that blog too!

{Robyn & James’ Wedding}

Wherever you go, whatever you do, be in love.
-Emerson

Remember Robyn & James from their engagement shoot, not too long ago? They’re the wonderful couple who gave me beer and homemade gourmet pizza at their engagement shoot…pretty memorable! Well, now they are a Mr. & Mrs!

Their wedding day started with Robyn and her girls getting ready at her parents’ home and James and his fellas getting ready at his & Robyn’s apartment. I always love watching the interactions between the bride and her family and her bride’s maids on this emotional day. Sometimes advice is given, sometimes tears are shed but there’s always laughter! Machado Photography always manages to capture some wonderful memories on these pre-wedding mornings.

Once Robyn and the ladies were ready, we had a few spare minutes to take some photos in the backyard, as well as some using her Dad’s vintage mustang as a pretty amazing prop. (And speaking of pretty amazing, Robyn’s Dad made some fantastic chicken noodle soup for us! I like these people; they’re always feeding me!)

The ceremony and reception were held at the Waterloo Region Museum in Kitchener; the venue is a photographer’s dream! The “first look” pictures turned out wonderfully against a background of weathered barn board in the Doon Village area. Also to our advantage were the heritage buildings, the farm animals….all made for interesting backdrops! We used the opportunity to take photos for their Thank You cards as well.

After the outdoor ceremony (with a train engine in the background!), Machado Photography incorporated as many of the Museum’s architectural features as possible to make the most of the wedding photos. The modern, colourful facade of the building and the train station were favourites!

Guests enjoyed the hors d’oeuvres, including oysters, hummus and sliders, then hit the dance floor to show off their moves. The groom’s brother was a fantastic swing dancer, so DJ Hank accommodated! DJ Hank, of Hank Stone Productions (www.hypnotisthankstone.com) was a blast to work with; he clearly loves his job and knows what the people want!

To all you future Brides & Grooms: take note of Robyn & James’ choice of venue. If you would like a variety of backdrops for your wedding pictures, choose a location that offers interesting choices. Another consideration is that by having their ceremony and reception in one place, we had extra “bonus time” to take photos. It’s not always possible to have both at the same location, but I’ve been a guest at weddings where the venues were 30 minutes apart…Machado Photography can take manywonderful pictures in 30 minutes! Plus, less traveling time on your big day means more time to enjoy the festivities!

Machado Photography would like to wish Robyn & James all the best in their long and happy future together! Thank you for inviting Mike & I to be part of your day!

{Monica & Jeff’s Wedding}

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.
                                -Vivienne Greene

Machado Photography has always had a little unwritten agreement with Mother Nature, and so far Mather Nature has been pretty good about keeping her word. But then I woke up in the early morning hours of Friday, June 13th to the rumbling of thunder and the sound of rain hammering on my window. My first thought was “Uh oh, that was not in the forecast.” My second thought was “Woohoo!”

Sounds strange, I know, but it was the morning of Monica & Jeff’s outdoor wedding and as much as most brides & grooms dread a rainy wedding day, I knew that Monica and Jeff would not be devastated by a little rainstorm, so I was allowed to be a bit excited! As a photographer I know that the creative possibilities in the rain are limitless and believe it or not, it’s not that often that it rains during one of my shoots. Instantly my brain was whirring through ideas and plans of what we would need to do for perfect rain photos…no matter what the weather brought, we were ready for it!

As it turned out, the rain stopped and the clouds rolled on by and soon you wouldn’t have even known that it had rained! The rain plans were shelved and the umbrellas were put away and the beautiful outdoor ceremony at Victoria Park went exactly as planned.

While I photographed the ladies getting ready at their hotel, my partner Mike met up with the fellas and got great photos of them preparing for the big day. Looking at the pictures we took, clearly no one was at all nervous; everyone was so at ease and stress-free!

After a lovely ceremony at the Bandstand at Victoria Park, we took advantage of the location to do the photos. All of that morning rain made everything that was green even greener, resulting in stunning nature shots. Monica & Jeff were brave enough to get close to some geese and their babies (if you’ve ever gotten too close to a goose, you know they were taking their lives in their hands!!!) which made for some adorable images. After they voluntarily risked their lives for those pics, I knew that they were game for anything so we had some fun with different ideas!

Monica & Jeff planned a unique wedding with a few twists on the traditional that reflected their personalities perfectly. I heard many guests say that the wedding was “so Jeff & Monica”! The gown, the flowers, having the ceremony in the park, the chocolate fountain and donut bar at the reception, the wonderful speeches, “forcing” their family and friends to write poems for them, the handcrafted centerpieces…”so Monica & Jeff”! And I was thrilled to see that they had framed dozens of the photos from their engagement session and displayed them throughout the reception!

If you’re planning your occasion, take note: no matter what you want, whether it meets with “tradition” or not, go for it! It’s your day, make it your own! Make it unique, make it a day you and your guests will remember! Above all else, if it makes you happy, go for it!

To see more of Monica and Jeff, check out their engagement photos too!  This couple is way too cute not to!!

What a wonderful day, what an amazing reception…thank you both so much for inviting Machado Photography to join you in celebrating your day!

{Stephanie & Pat’s Engagement}

True love doesn’t have a happy ending;
True love has no ending.

                                -author unknown

As a business owner, the greatest form of advertising is referrals from happy clients, friends and fans. As a photographer, I try to let my work do the advertising for me. A prime example of both of these coming together is my latest engagement session with Stephanie & Pat. They didn’t see my name advertised in a newspaper or magazine, they were a referral from their friends, Matt & Lindsay. So it’s true what they say about a picture speaking a thousand words!  I’m truly blessed to have amazing fans like you guys! I appreciate and love all your support!!

So onto the important part…this is all about Stephanie & Pat! I packed up my picnic blanket in my favourite vintage suitcase (perfect props!) and we headed over to St. Jacob’s Millrace to take advantage of the gorgeous weather.

If you aren’t familiar with the Millrace Trail, it’s a great little walking trail that follows  along the Conestogo River for about 2km. It’s also a nice biking trail, which was part of the reason that it made an ideal location for avid bikers Stephanie & Pat. I thought it was a fantastic idea to incorporate their bikes into the photo shoot; I love to have a couple’s pictures be about them, to include elements that make their pictures more personal. Having them ride their bikes and even use the tire as a prop for the “ring shot” accomplishes that very well!

Another unique feature for their photos happened by accident; we were taking photos next to the railroad tracks when the train came along and low and behold, we had an instant audience! The conductors waved and smiled and posed in the background as they came by. Makes for some fun pictures and a neat story!

Congratulations on your engagement, Stephanie & Pat! Machado Photography is looking forward to the wedding!

{Holly & Vince’s Engagement Shoot}

When I saw you I fell in love
And you smiled because you knew
                          -William Shakespeare

Holly & Vince came to this engagement shoot with a plan! They were prepared with a pup, props and great ideas to get the ball rolling when we arrived on location at  Waterloo Park.

 Some people are saying that including furry friends is a “trend”, but I don’t feel that way at all…I think pets are part of the family and should always be included! Oscar is a little scene stealer! Whether he was posing for pictures, holding his chalkboard sign or rolling around on a dead crow messing up his pristine white fur, Oscar managed to get a lot of our attention!

Once Oscar’s turn in front of the camera was done, he had some quality play time with my assistant/partner Mike while we continued our mission to get the perfect photos. Holly & Vince brought along the ampersand (you know, the “&” thingy!) and it was a great little prop for the pictures; I may have to get one for the Machado Photography prop box!

The chalkboards were handy for the save the date pics and for Oscar’s message, as well as for a quote that Holly & Vince picked out. At one point, we even managed to get a somewhat reluctant Holly up a tree! It’s obviously true love for these two because Vince got up there too! Great results, but I think they were a little more comfortable sitting on the tree trunk that was at ground level!

Waterloo Park is a great shoot location because there are so many different backgrounds all within one walkable area. We covered a lot of ground and it was worth it to get those beautiful pictures; on the  railway tracks (don’t try this at home, kids!), in the woods, a picnic area, by the gardens. There are so many backgrounds that it looks like we had several different shoots instead of just one!

May 2016 is going to be here more quickly than we think! Can’t wait for the big day!

{Danielle & Dale’s Engagement Shoot}

Love is fathomless; a unique emotion evoking unparalleled happiness.
                                 -Jen Roos

Do you remember the beautiful photos from Matt & Lindsay’s wedding way back in 2012:)
I guess Machado Photography made a great impression, because Matt’s sister Danielle and her fiancé Dale have asked us to capture the memories of their monumental event too!

I was really looking forward to getting together with Danielle & Dale to do their engagement photos. They’re living in Saskatoon but getting married here, so it was fantastic that we were able to co-ordinate schedules. They must be juggling a lot of things to get their wedding organized from 2800km away!

We chose the Kaufman Flats as the location for our shoot, which is a park with a short and sweet walking trail along the Grand River.  Nature at it’s finest!  It was the perfect place for the happy couple and their 2 furry friends to get used to being in front of my lens!

They cleverly brought their own props: log slices on which they’d written the info for their Save the Date cards, and the pups wore them as necklaces…(sites like Pinterest are a wealth of useful information to get these sorts of ideas…everyone planning a wedding should spend an hour or two….or 7!…just getting creatively inspired!). They also used clear side of the log slice to put the engagement ring on for a twist on the traditional ring photo.

In order to capture the fun personality of Danielle and Dale, we took a lot of candid shots of them just being them, laughing and joking around and log wrestling…you know, couple stuff! The results were exactly what we were hoping for! I think it’s going to be very hard for them to pick their favourites!

Some clients don’t think they need engagement pictures, but I strongly encourage every couple to have the session. I know I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: it’s a bit like a practice run before the big day. The bride & groom are very busy on their wedding day and there isn’t enough time to try each set up from every vantage point. The engagement shoot gives us a chance to get the couple comfortable with being the center of attention and helps Machado Photography figure out how to get the best and most flattering angles of the couple in front of our camera. So don’t forgo the engagement shoot!

Plus, look how much fun it is! Just ask Dale and Danielle!
Looking forward to being part of their big day in September!

{Sara & Brad’s Engagement Shoot}

“They say that a dog is a man’s best friend. This may be true, but I say a horse is a girl’s best friend.”   -unknown

And now for the story of the recent session Machado Photography had with Sara and Brad, their cute little pooch Buffy (yes, as in “the Vampire Slayer”!) and Mick, the amorous horse!

Ahhh, another beautiful day for an outdoor photoshoot! Mostly sunny and warm with just enough cloud in the sky so that the models don’t have to squint into each other’s eyes … or my lens!

My assistant Becky and I had a date with Sara & Brad to capture some memories! Sara & Brad will be getting married in July, so it was time to get some beautiful engagement pictures. We had a couple of locations planned for this lovely day, starting with the happy couple’s own home, then moving over to an amazing farm and stable called Cherry Lane in Morriston.

Cherry Lane is where Sara spends many enjoyable hours horseback riding, so her favourite horse Mick featured fairly prominently in our photos that day! The owners of the farm were fantastic folks, and they pretty much gave us free run of the place to take our pictures. There are some amazing settings at Cherry Lane and we took advantage of using as many as we could. The silo was stunning, the trails, the huge pond, the rolling fields…and of course, the stables and horses!

It was decided that having Sara’s best bronco buddy (ok, technically Mick is not a true bronco, as he’s very well behaved and perfectly trained, but the alliteration worked well!) would be a lot of fun, plus we’d taken some excellent photos with Buffy, so we went for it. As it turned out, Mick was very happy to be included in the photos. Very happy. And since this is a PG rated blog, I’ll just say that I now have a new editing skill to add to my extensive repertoire!

So, much laughter was laughed and many wonderful photos were taken and the day was an absolute success as you can see for yourself!

Stay tuned later this summer for Sara & Brad’s wedding pictures; Machado Photography is excited to be part of their big day….not as excited as Mick, but pretty excited!

{The Gooding’s Growing Family}

The best thing about having a sister was that I always had a friend.

                                                              ~Cali Rae Turner

LilyAnne can not wait to meet her new baby brother! It won’t be long now, either…just a few more short weeks and she’ll be a Big Sister!

I’ve known Melanie for a long time (we work in the same building), and Machado Photography did the photo shoot when she and her husband Dan were expecting LilyAnne, so it’s interesting to see how she and Dan have changed since they became parents the first time!

For this photo session, we went out to the Huron Natural Area. It’s a beautiful conservation area on Trillium Drive, with lots of walking trails, a small lake with a dock, a few little bridges and lots of lovely green space! It’s beauty also makes it a popular place for photos; there was a wedding party getting their pictures done too! Luckily, there’s so much perfect space that there’s plenty of room for everybody and there’s no need to compete for “the good spots”!

Once we got started, it was quickly realized who the little star of this shoot was going to be! LilyAnne had us in stitches the whole time. Her Mommy had been helping her practice her smiles and poses and she was more than ready for my camera! She has a pretty fantastic way with words, like when Dan tried to pick her up by her arms and she dramatically called out “Daddy, you don’t have to break my arms!” What a little ham!

I love the way the pictures of her holding the chalkboard turned out, they’re just adorable! She was full of giggles and smiles the whole day … accept when it came time to try and get some pictures of Melanie and Dan alone! Poor LilyAnne just wanted to be in on the fun, so she was a little pouty about being left out for a few minutes, but even that was pretty cute and funny! What 4 year old wants to be left out of all of the fun and excitement?

Whether I was watching through my camera lens or when we were walking around the trails to find our next photo spot, I couldn’t help but find this family’s happiness contagious! Their excitement and anticipation for their growing family is so apparent in person and on film!

Machado Photography wishes Dan and Melanie huge congratulations on your impending arrival  and all the best to LilyAnne for the future adventures that she’ll have with her new little brother!

Stay tuned for the big reveal of Baby Brother’s name and first photo session!

{Tiffany & Tyler}

“You’ll be his first kiss, his first love, his first friend; You are his mother and he is your whole world. He is your little boy.” -unknown

You may remember Tiffany & Tyler from previous blogs I’ve posted; I’ve been lucky enough to have done other photo shoots with them in the past (remember “Cake Smash”?
http://www.machadophotography.com/2013/10/tylers-cake-smash/  -there’s a reminder in case you’ve forgotten!). This time we did a “Mommy & Me” set of pictures. Mothers and sons have such a special bond!

As you can see, Tyler is an adorable, photogenic, happy little boy and the pictures turned out wonderfully! There are so many great ones, it will be hard for his parents to choose their favourites!

But aside from the obviously perfect subjects of this photoshoot, there are some other notable things that I need to discuss for blogging purposes! After all, part of the reason for this blog is to give Machado Photography’s clients tips and pointers and ideas.

First point to note:
As I mentioned, this is not the first time I’ve photographed Tiffany, Richard & Tyler. They did a brilliant thing by pre-booking 3 separate shoots.

Life is busy….life with a toddler is REALLY busy! And those little ones grow so fast. One minute they’re little bundles of warmth swaddled in a blanket, the next they’re smiling and showing off their developing personality….then suddenly they’re walking and talking! They change so much in such a short period of time! It’s really easy for a busy parent to get distracted from doing things like booking an appointment to get photos done, then suddenly their baby is a pre-schooler.

By pre-booking, Tiffany & Richard made sure that they will make the time to record these adorable images of Tyler that will last forever!

Second point to ponder:
Notice the fantastic props in this shoot? The blocks, the books, the beautiful blue chair? These are things that are important to this family; Grandpa made that beautiful chair! Tyler loves that book! Tiffany brought them with her, and they help make the photos so much more personal. Machado Photography has a great selection of props that you can use, but when folks bring their own, it can make their shoot even more special. Favourite toys, outfits, books, games….don’t be shy! Bring them along and we’ll incorporate them! And if your little one is camera shy, having their own toys can make them more comfortable, which makes for sweeter pictures.

Third point to consider:
It’s been mentioned in the past, but it bears repeating: think about location! You aren’t committed to just one space for your photoshoot. Whether we’re coming to you or you’re coming to the studio, we can do more than one setting so that your photos have more diversity. Something as simple as going from indoors to outdoors can create a completely different feel for your pictures.
 For this particular shoot, we did some in studio, then decided to head outside and play in the fresh air and snow…see Tyler’s rosy cheeks? Too cute!

There you are! Not only do you get to see cute pictures, you get a few pointers to help you plan your next photo session with Machado Photography!

And I’m looking forward to Tiffany, Richard & Tyler’s next visit!

YUM! Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria

With the “pizzaiolo’s” (pizza chefs) throwing hand-stretched doughs in the air, and pulling pizzas out of our imported fire oven, we set a mood that cannot be duplicated….High end Italian coffee, pizza, and ice cream under one roof, does it get any better?
-from the Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria website

I have been drooling over the “coming soon” posters in the windows at 15 King St South in Waterloo for quite some time now…I knew that the Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria would be opening soon, and my inner foodie was really looking forward to it!

I was ecstatic when Machado Photography got an email from Stuart Karol, Famoso’s Marketing  Coordinator, asking if we would be interested in shooting the VIP grand opening on Sunday, Febraury 16th.

HECK, YES WE WOULD!!!

It’s been awesome working with with Ray Ho, Marketing and Communications  Manager and Kelly Farraj, Vice President – Eastern Canada. They are the nicest guys!

I was not disappointed when we walked into the Famoso Pizzeria; it was modernized and old world charming, casual and upscale all at the same time! The buzz-word for Famoso is Authentic, and everything certainly fits the bill!

I learned a lot about what the Famoso brand name stands for: authentically trained pizzaiolos tossing the dough (no rolling pins allowed!), tomatoes and Caputo flour imported from Italy, cheese called “fior-di-latte” that was invented in Italy and, of course, the center piece of the restaurant…the imported bell-shaped fire oven that reaches temperatures of 900 degrees and cooks your pizza in 90 seconds! It is all old-world and authentic. You can taste the difference, and it’s incomparable!

The menu is authentically Italian, from the Caprese and Napoli salads, award winning Tomato Bisque, the Margherita and Vesuvio pizzas, Italian sodas, an extensive wine list, and many delicious Flavors of Fiasco Gelato! They also offer an amazing dessert called Affogato, which is espresso over a scoop of Fiasco Gelato…a must try!

But you don’t have to take my word for it, you can see from the looks on the faces of all of the happy customers from the VIP night! As I made the rounds taking photos, everyone was raving about the delicious food and fantastic atmosphere. You might recognize some of the faces in the pictures of this By Invitation event; MP Peter Braid was there, Patti Brooks (from the BIA) was there, Michelle Stevens & Alf Ens from the Waterloo Chronicle, and Justin Lussier…the man who was inspired by his trip to Italy and Naples to start the first Famoso Pizzeria.  A marvelous evening was had by all!

Congratulations to Patrick & Ryan and all of their staff; Machado Photography extends a warm welcome to Uptown Waterloo and I look forward to many more delicious meals at Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria (actually, I already have a date dine there this week with friends)!
