Nicola and Aaron’s Wedding

Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life…love gives us a fairy tale.

                                                                                              -author unknown

Machado Photography had the honour of being asked to photograph the wedding of Nicola & Aaron, which took place in the summer of 2016. (Be sure to check out their engagement shoot:  http://www.machadophotography.com/2016/06/nicola-aarons-engagement-shoot/)

Between working with the happy couple for the at their engagement session and the fact that I’ve known Nicola for several years, I knew this wedding would be an absolute blast!

Nicola & Aaron found an absolutely gorgeous venue for their day. Located in Peterborough, the Northview Gardens is one of the most beautiful locations I’ve ever been to. It’s a photographer’s dream! Immaculate gardens, quaint little buildings including a cozy cottage and funky bar, a stationary carriage, a reception hall…and so many little vignettes set up around the grounds that we didn’t even get to all of them!

Between the location and the energy of the bride & groom and their guests, practically every picture that I took that day was a keeper!  Nicola & Aaron were game to pose and play and their poses were so spontaneous and natural. Their energy and happiness was obviously contagious, as you can see from the images of their guests, especially all of the kids!

I’m so happy knowing that I was part of capturing Nicola & Aaron’s day, helping them to put their wonderful memories into something tangible that they can treasure for the rest of their lives (which began in the Cayman Islands very shortly after the wedding, by the way…lucky them!).

Congratulations and cheers to a happy and love-filled future!

{Sonya and Alex’s Wedding}

Marriage is not a noun, it’s a verb. It isn’t something you get, it’s something you do. It’s the way you love your partner every day.

-Barbara DeAngelis

I met Sonya & Alex through my assistant Becky (who you can see in the pictures as one of the lovely bridesmaids!). We had a brilliant engagement session at the Doon Mill Ruins, the remains of a flour mill that was built in the mid 1800s. The ruins make a stunning background at any time of year, especially when there’s snow on the ground. We definitely got some unique and beautiful photos of the happy couple!

One early morning in May, Machado Photography headed to Oakville to photograph Alex & Sonya’s big day. The party got ready at the Admiral Inn. The ladies, decked out in their matching robes, had a lot of laughs while waiting for each other’s hair and make up to get finished.

The guys set up a series of tasks that the groom had to successfully complete before he could see his bride for the first time, including dancing, costumes and games. The groom made it through his tasks and down at the waterfront, we photographed the “First Look”.

The wedding day included some cultural elements which were interesting to photograph. The bride changed into a traditional Asian dress  (brought from Hong Kong) for the tea ceremony which involved both the bride and groom serving tea to their parents. I learned that the purity of tea represents that the love is pure and noble; the stability of tea stands for faithful love; the fertility of tea represents that the family will have many children. I love learning about these things! At midnight, the bride’s Ukrainian heritage was represented with traditional dancers. The guests loved it; what a way to cap off a memorable day!

Machado Photography wishes Alex & Sonya a lifetime of love and happiness

{Holly & Vince’s Wedding}

“Love doesn’t make the world go round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile.”
—Franklin P. Jones
A perfect day for a wedding!

Holly and her entourage of lovely ladies spent the morning getting their getting hair and make-up done at the beautiful Shangri-La Hair Studio & Spa in Cambridge. The Shangri-La also happens to have some great features for photographing, including a funky fireplace in the reception area and a grand staircase with an ornate chandelier. Memories were made while they prepared for the day, sipping mimosas, chatting and sharing laughter…just how every wedding day should begin! They then moved over to Holly and Vince’s picturesque home to dress.

While I was enjoying my morning with the ladies, my assistant Daniel was at the Courtyard Marriott with the gentlemen. They had to work at looking all dapper too!

Holly & Vince’s traditional ceremony was held at St Aloysius in Kitchener, where the guests were greeted with live music as they waited for the ceremony to begin. A bright, light-filled church is beautiful, even more so when seen through the eyes of a photographer! We were able to get wonderful photos inside the church without resorting to distracting lighting tactics, always one of my main goals when shooting a wedding. A photographer should melt into the background, not draw attention away from the importance of what everyone is there for.

After the exchanging of vows, the bridal party and parents traveled to Rockway Gardens. It was a big crew to photograph…and a lot of fun! Rockway is an amazing park with so many interesting backdrops. I especially love how the tiered gardens look with such a nice big group of folks! I even snuck a few pictures of the 2 little ring bearers having a burger break…gotta keep the kiddies fed and happy! The bridal party had some fun pictures with the personalized sunglasses that Holly & Vince gave everyone; Vince & Holly look like they could be the models selling them!

The reception was held at St George’s Hall; wonderful decor, delicious food…and lots of candid photos of the fantastic guests!  Meeting new people and convincing them to be in pictures is always fun! I was also impressed with how great Vince was with communicating with Daniel & I; often the bride is the one dealing with most of the details, but Vince took a lot of the pressure off of Holly so that she could spend more time enjoying the day instead of worrying about details.

Machado Photography wishes you all the best for a happy and successful marriage! Thank you so much for inviting us to be part of your day.

{Melissa & Andrea’s Engagement Shoot}

Engagement marks the end of a whirlwind romance and beginning of an eternal love story.

                                          -unknown

In my work as a photographer, I’ve crossed paths with Melissa & Andrea a few times over the years; she is a brilliant make-up artist, he is a highly skilled hair stylist & salon owner. Several of the brides that I’ve photographed have been beautified by one or the other (or both) of this talented couple!

And now they’re getting married! Before the big day comes around, we set out to capture some amazing engagement shots of the happy couple. We started out in their very own backyard; some of the best pictures I take are in surroundings that mean something to my clients. Melissa & Andrea have a great yard… a cool cedar hedge and a nifty gate, it’d be a shame not to use them as back drops! There’s always an added bonus of using a client’s own yard too…no strangers around watching, making anyone self-conscious! Sometimes it can be hard to get a natural, relaxed fun shot when the location is crowded. (Luckily Andrea & Melissa were comfortable in front of the camera, so there were no worries when we eventually left their yard and headed for public spaces!)

Another bonus of being in their yard…their sweet little Pomeranian pup, Preshy, (short for Precious) was able to take part in some of the photo shoot! What an adorable little ball of fur!

Since Melissa & Andrea wanted most of their pictures to have an Urban esthetic, we headed over to the Tannery on Charles Street, which is a refurbished factory, now home to restaurants and offices. A friend of theirs was able to pull some strings to allow us to use the inside of the building. I’ve never shot there before and was so impressed with the setting. There are so many architectural details; the original distressed brickwork, the unique stairs, the gorgeous pendant lights…backgrounds that provided tonnes of interest to the photos but subtle enough that Melissa & Andrea still stole the show!

Looking forward to their September wedding….can’t wait to work with them again!

{Gwen}

May you touch dragonflies and stars, dance with fairies and talk to the moon. May you grow up with gracious hearts and people who care. Welcome to the world, little one….it’s been waiting for you.
                                                                           -Author Unknown

I love that my “clients” become friends; to be able to be part of the monumental moments of their lives over the span of years is an amazing thing! Sara & Brad are one of those couples.

You may remember Sara & Brad from their wonderful engagement (http://www.machadophotography.com/2014/06/sara-brads-engagement-shoot/ ) & wedding photos

( http://www.machadophotography.com/2014/09/sara-brads-wedding/ ) a couple of years ago… horses, jumping on beds and the butterfly conservatory….definitely very memorable days! Well, they recently got in touch with me again with some exciting news: they invited Machado Photography to come to their lovely home and meet their newest addition…Baby Gwen!

What a sweet little girl! It was so easy to capture dozens and dozens of beautiful pictures of this smiling, happy baby! It’s hard to say whether she’s taking after her mom or dad so far; she really is a perfect combination of both of them!

We took many of the pictures in Gwen’s nursery; surrounded by so many toy horses, she’s certain to be a future equestrian, I have no doubt! I’m sure that she’s already been out to meet her mom’s favourite horse Mick! And she already has a great little library started too, lucky girl!

We also decided that it was important to capture some bonding moments between Mother & Daughter; Sara feeding Gwen, holding her safe in her arms, letting baby know she’s protected as she adjusts to the great big new world. These are the moments that go by too quickly and having these photos will be an important memory.

Congratulations to Sara & Brad on their growing family!
I hope that babyhood is filled with lots of fun, love and cuddles.

{Nicola & Aaron’s Engagement Shoot}

They told me that to make her fall in love I had to make her laugh…But every time she laughs, I’m the one who falls in love.
-author unknown

Victoria Park in Kitchener is always a great place for a photo shoot, but this month it has some extra exciting features, thanks to CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener & Area)!

I didn’t know that the art festival (which only takes place every 2 years) had begun and I don’t think that the bride-&-groom-to-be, Nicola & Aaron, knew either! What a fantastic bonus! We were able to use these fun & funky, incredibly creative art exhibits for some of their engagement shoot, which means that their pictures will be extra unique and one-of-a-kind.

I’ve known Nicola for over 6 years, ever since we worked in the same building in Uptown Waterloo. We’ve always gotten along great, she’s such a fun person! I’m so happy that I get to be part of Nicola & Aaron’s exciting day…but the wedding day is still a few weeks away, so in the meantime, we’ll just have to tease everyone with a sneak peek of the engagement shoot!

It’s really interesting that even though these pictures were taken with intriguing “props” in a beautiful park setting, the happy couple still manages to outshine their surroundings! We had so much fun and a lot of laughs throughout the shoot; it was easy to get natural, great pictures.

Machado Photography can’t wait to share in your upcoming wedding, Nicola & Aaron!

Zachary’s Bar Mitzvah

Mazel Tov!

Machado Photography just experienced a very exciting first….I was honoured to be invited to photograph a Bar Mitzvah ceremony.

Several years ago when I worked a part-time job at a shop called FAB, I met a lady named Alysse. We had a great chat about my photography, and she remembered me when it came time for her family to celebrate her son Zachary’s momentous occasion. I had never been to a Bar Mitzvah, so I decided to learn about what it is before I headed to Temple Shalom at the University of Waterloo for the big day!

I knew that it is a Jewish coming-of-age ceremony, and that it is a very important milestone in a young man’s life, but I wasn’t completely sure of what a Bar Mitzvah signifies and what would take place at the ceremony. (I know that there’s a different ceremony for girls called a Bat Mitzvah, but since this is about Zachary’s big day, I’ll focus on what I learned about Bar Mitzvah!)

In the Jewish faith and culture, boys become Bar Mitzvah when they turn 13 years old; they are considered to be adults. The ceremony acknowledges that, among other things, he is now responsible for his own actions, must follow the commandments and can take part in leading services.

Zachary had a lot of work to do in the months before the ceremony. He studied the 613 mitzvahs of the Torah (the Temple’s Torah is the beautiful, elaborate scroll that you see in many of the pictures), studying the fundamentals of Judaism, including the laws regulating daily life, he learned traditional readings and chanting the Haftarah. It took months of hard work to prepare.

A Bar Mitzvah ceremony takes place as part of the prayer service, and marks the first time Zachary was called up to participate in the readings. He made his family and friends proud at his ceremony and did so well with his readings and speech. There were blessings from the rabbi and lovely words from Zachary’s family.

After Zachary’s reading, the members of the congregation followed the tradition of showering him with candy, symbolizing the beginning of a sweet life. The kids in attendance made sure that no one tripped over any stray candy by picking up every last one!

After the ceremony there were more celebrations, including a slide show of family pictures, wonderful food and much laughter and happiness.

I met so many wonderful people at the ceremony and captured a lot of proud smiles on camera.
I was so honoured to be part of this amazing day and important milestone.
Mazel Tov, Zachary….the best is yet to come!

{Lindsey & Shamus} Engagement

“Love is fuel for the soul.”    – Molly Friedenfeld

Machado Photography is going to have a busy summer in 2016! We’ve gotten so many referrals from past weddings that we’re booking up quickly…which is a great problem to have! We love being busy!

Just before Christmas was a bustling time for engagement shoots for all of those upcoming summer weddings; one of those sessions was Lindsey and Shamus. I met the happy couple while photographing Maya and Patrick’s wedding in August. Lindsey was one of Maya’s bride’s maids; she & Shamus must have liked how the photos turned out because they asked Machado Photography to be part of their big day! (I can’t say I blame them, Maya & Patrick’s pictures were gorgeous, even if I do say so myself! http://www.machadophotography.com/2015/10/)

We decided to do the photos at the Doon Ruins because they’re such a cool backdrop; after a few wrong turns, I eventually got there! It was a perfect day for the session because not only was there snow on the ground, but we even saw some moments of blizzard-like flurries (which created fantastic pictures), and times when the sun peeked out for us. And even better, it was pretty warm out too!

We traveled around to a few interesting settings, including this old garage with a vintage fuel pump. Love these!  They’re just a bit different from the usual engagement pictures! I also really loved the plaid and jeans that Lindsey & Shamus wore to the session; works so well with the outdoor settings.

You’ll probably notice the extra face in these photos! This is Whiskey! Check out that fantastic sweater! I sure hope he’ll be at the wedding, he’s so photogenic!

If you’re planning your engagement session, don’t forget:
1) Pre-plan for a unique location.
2) Wear whatever makes you happy… be yourselves!
3) Bring your furry friends…they’re part of the family…and they can make you more comfortable in front of lens if you’re camera shy!

{Reneé & Sean} Engagement Shoot

No winter is too cold when you have enough love.
-Author Unknown

A little chill in the air and snow on the ground doesn’t mean that an outdoor photoshoot is not an option; it means that the photos are going to be beautiful! Taking winter pictures can be difficult for an inexperienced photographer due to the light reflecting off of the pristine white snow…luckily, Machado Photography photographers are experts with lots of experience in any circumstance!

In 2014, Machado Photography had the pleasure of being hired to photograph the wedding of Robyn & James where we met Robyn’s sister Reneé and her boyfriend Sean. (You can check out Robyn & James’ fun cooking engagement photos here:
http://www.machadophotography.com/2013/11/robyn-james-engagement/  as well as their gorgeous wedding here:
http://www.machadophotography.com/2014/07/robyn-james-wedding/ ).  Now here it is a year and a half later and we’ve been asked to photograph Reneé and Sean’s monumental event!

Just before Christmas I met with the happy couple at Waterloo Park for their engagement shoot. The freshly fallen snow was a happy coincidence! There was just enough snow to cover the ground and make everything bright and shiny, but not so much that we had to trudge through deep drifts or render the benches unsittable! Another little bonus was that despite the snow, it was actually quite warm out, a perfect day for strolling around the park.

Sean & Reneé loved the versatility of the location (as do I; that’s why I recommend Waterloo Park to my many of my clients who don’t have an idea of where they’d like to go for their photos).  As you can see, it looks like we drove all over the city taking pictures; we had so many settings to work with! Amongst the trees, in the fields of tall grasses, in front of the Perimeter Institute, on the bridge, in the gazebo, behind the Grist Mill….I don’t know how they’re going to pick their favourites because all of these shots are amazing!

Photographing Sean and Reneé was so much fun; they’re naturals in front of the lens. I can’t wait for the wedding!

Mesar Fall Family Photos

“Fall colors are funny. They’re so bright and intense and beautiful. It’s like nature is trying to fill you up with color, to saturate you so you can stockpile it before winter turns everything muted and dreary.”
– Siobhan Vivian

Machado Photography has worked with the Mesar Family before (see some of the pictures from that shoot at http://www.machadophotography.com/2013/09/mesar-family-photos/  ), and I was thrilled to be asked to capture some more family memories for them. After that initial session we had casually discussed a winter shoot, but life gets busy and chaotic and so here it is 2 years later and the Mesars contacted me with the idea of an autumn session at the lovely Huron Natural Area.

A lot can change in a couple of years and the biggest change for this newest session was the addition of an adorable young fellow named Nixon! At 6 months old, he is much fawned over by big sister Mia, who clearly adores him and loves to make him laugh…and she knows just how to get him giggling, too! Way back in 2013 Mia was a bit shy for the first part of our bubble-filled photoshoot, but she’s certainly come out of her shell! When she wasn’t helping me get Nixon’s best smiles, she was posing up a storm for my camera. I love the pictures of her on the tree stump and the ones with her colourful umbrella. Mia loved the idea that everyone had to say “PEPPERONI” instead of the usual cheese!

I really enjoy doing fall shoots; the backdrop of the vibrant trees is always stunning. Seeing the Mesars dressed up in cozy jackets, sweaters and scarves makes me want to get out there on a crisp fall morning and go for a hike! I have to admit though, I was glad it was warm enough to take Nixon’s toque off so that I could photograph his brilliant ginger hair!

Even the wet weather didn’t put a damper on the day; it wasn’t raining while we were out and overcast skies actually make the colours pop a bit more in the pictures. There was an interesting haze in the air when we were by the water, which adds another element to the photos. Jennifer brought along a blanket so that we could do some sitting pics too.

I can’t wait to see which of these gorgeous family pictures the Mesars will choose as their favourites!
