{Sonya and Alex’s Wedding}

Marriage is not a noun, it’s a verb. It isn’t something you get, it’s something you do. It’s the way you love your partner every day.

I met Sonya & Alex through my assistant Becky (who you can see in the pictures as one of the lovely bridesmaids!). We had a brilliant engagement session at the Doon Mill Ruins, the remains of a flour mill that was built in the mid 1800s. The ruins make a stunning background at any time of year, especially when there’s snow on the ground. We definitely got some unique and beautiful photos of the happy couple!

One early morning in May, Machado Photography headed to Oakville to photograph Alex & Sonya’s big day. The party got ready at the Admiral Inn. The ladies, decked out in their matching robes, had a lot of laughs while waiting for each other’s hair and make up to get finished.

The guys set up a series of tasks that the groom had to successfully complete before he could see his bride for the first time, including dancing, costumes and games. The groom made it through his tasks and down at the waterfront, we photographed the “First Look”.

The wedding day included some cultural elements which were interesting to photograph. The bride changed into a traditional Asian dress  (brought from Hong Kong) for the tea ceremony which involved both the bride and groom serving tea to their parents. I learned that the purity of tea represents that the love is pure and noble; the stability of tea stands for faithful love; the fertility of tea represents that the family will have many children. I love learning about these things! At midnight, the bride’s Ukrainian heritage was represented with traditional dancers. The guests loved it; what a way to cap off a memorable day!

Machado Photography wishes Alex & Sonya a lifetime of love and happiness
